Ein utopischer Raum muss zwei miteinander unvereinbare Sehnsuechte umfassen; den Wunsch einerseits nach unendlicher Ausdehnung, andererseits nach allumfassender Abgeschlossenheit.

As science fiction has moved increasingly into immmaterial realms - first to the void of outer space, then to the hidden spaces inside the body or within the recesses of the computer - I have moved as well: from the urban modernist landscape of New York City to the junipered hills of New Mexico. Suddenly I have regained the sky and the sun, and I'm becoming quite properly chauvinistic. In learning to drive, I find that this landscape belongs to me in a new way.
